Every city deserves to celebrate its birthday. Madras, that is now called Chennai City certainly needs a grand, memorable and wonderful celebration. Madras Day is celebrated on August 22, 2018. Madras Day is a day of celebrations organised in the city of Madras, the capital city of Tamil Nadu. It commemorates the founding of the modern city by establishing Fort St George on a small piece of land acquired from the last King of Chandragiri in 1639 by the British East India Company.

The deal was struck by Francis Day, his ‘dubash’ Beri Thimmappa, and their superior, Andrew Cogan, with the local Nayak rulers. It is believed that this deal was made on that historic day. Out of the fort, grew settlements. Then the villages around it were brought together. It also includes contests such as T-shirt designing, documentary film contest, multimedia presentation for schools and quizzes in both Tamil and English. T-shirts to mark the event are also released. The talks delivered to mark the week-long celebrations usually involve lectures explaining the heritage and history of the city. There are also events for citizens where they can post about their life years ago in Madras and share their views on how Madras grew into the Chennai and today knows as Greater Chennai City.
