The spacious Ambattur Lake located on Thiruverkadu Road, Ayappakkam, is an important water resource for the surrounding areas of Ambattur. The Ambattur Lake also served as an excellent source for recharging ground water. Many parts of the lake are covered by water hyacinths. This has led to the degeneration of the lake. Ambattur Lake is a rain-fed reservoir which reaches top levels during the monsoon seasons.
Environmentalists are very interested in keeping the picturesque Ambattur Lake alive. More over the lake is the hub of migratory birds like Flamingos, which are the most frequent visitors. K Ramadoss, President of North Chennai district Exnora, said that the lakes and water bodies should be protected, desilted and cleaned regularly. In order to protect and safe guard lakes, Exnora has suggested that the government should create a Water Body Protection Force to protect, manage and improve lakes and wetlands.
