Hundreds of shops remained closed in Thirumangalam,
Anna Nagar West and East and at various places in Chennai city on Thursday, 20th
September 2012 in response to a one-day strike called by various Trade Unions
and Political parties to protest against the Centre’s decision to hike diesel
and LPG prices and allowing Foreign Direct Investments in the retail sector.
The strike had no effect on the long-distance buses that operate from
Koyambedu. MTC and SETC buses were operated without disruption. The strike had
a significant effect on normal life in Chennai.
