A Marine Biodiversity Conservation
Awareness Mela titled Flipper Fest 2012was conducted for schools and colleges,
with various competitions at Kumararani Meena
Muthiah College, Gandhi Nagar ,
Adyar,Chennai on 19th and 20th July 2012.
The Principal Dr P.T Vijayashree
welcomed the gathering .Mr. Rakesh Vashist, IFS, Principle Chief Conservator of
Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden in his inaugural address, spoke about Indian
Marine biodiversity and how it can be protected.
He gave important facts on the
Marine Biosphere Reserve of Tamil Nadu and said the best college students
could go for a visit Gulf of
Mannar as an incentive to motivate the winners. Mr. S.C.Tyagi, DIG, Indian
Coast Guard (East) delivered the presidential address.
Dr. Meena Muthiah graced
the occasion. Dr. Supraja Dharini, Chairperson of Tree Foundation spoke about the
significance of Flipper Fest 2012 which is the 6th annual Flipper Fest. She
said ‘that only when people understand that the 3 basic needs of man air , water and food are provided by the
ocean will they care. It was heartwarming to see 218 children taking part in
the painting competition.
The informative posters displayed surely helped the
children take back much more knowledge
and inspired the students to
spread the message of environment care to as many as they could. All the
competitions laid emphasis on conserving ecosystem, specially low carbon
emission initiatives, coral bleaching, ocean pollution, endangered marine
species and the problems of marine litter and other phenomena which are
confronting the oceans now days.
