Travelling along Mount Road is going to change
with the ongoing metro rail construction work. To cope up with the rapidly
increasing vehicles on the road, a new rail based rapid transport system has
been conceived as a best alternative. It is the Chennai Metro Rail Project.
This project is aimed at providing the people of Chennai with a fast, reliable,
convenient, efficient, modern and economical mode of public transport, which is
properly integrated with other forms of public and private transport including
buses, suburban trains and MRTS.
The Phase I of the project consisting of two
corridors covering a length of 45.1 km is under construction. The elevated
section of the project is scheduled to be operational by 2013 and the entire
project is scheduled to be completed by the financial year 2014-2015.
About 55%
of the corridors in Phase I is underground and the remaining is elevated.
Underground stations would come up at LIC, Thousand Lights, Gemini, Teynampet,
and Saidapet.
To accommodate construction work for the Chennai Metro Rail
project, Traffic Police have made changes and diversions. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited has proposed to execute the underground station works
at three different locations on Mount Road
in-between Anna fly over to Nandanam junction.
Traffic
modifications have been implemented with effect from 07.04.2012.
The existing diversions at Eldams road will be shifted
to Nandhanam junction. There is no change in the movement of traffic from Anna
flyover towards Saidapet. From Nandanam Junction up to Anna Flyover one lane has been dedicated for MTC buses.
The stretch on Venkatnarayana Road from Mount Road up to South Boag Road is made
as one-way with entry from Mount Road and no entry from VN Road South Boag Road junction. As part of the work to build an underground
station on the stretch, some of the buildings adjoining P. Orr & Sons got
demolished
