Promote Home Gardening

In order to introduce city home gardening, the Deputy Director Horticulture Department Chennai has organized a campaign in Shri K C Sankaralinga Nadar Hr Sec School.  Hon’ble Speaker of Tamil Nadu assembly Mr D Jayakumar was the Chief guest who inaugurated the programme. On his arrival to the school campus the speaker was welcomed with pomp and fanfare by students, and the officials from horticulture department.  Before commencement of the campaign the chief guest planted a sapling in the school campus.  Ms Mary Sujatha Dy Director of Horticulture welcomed the gathering consisting of students, staff, and residents mostly of housewives. 

Mr. K Ramadoss President North Chennai Dist Exnora in his special address praised the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department for its best performance in production of vegetables and spices in the State which is honored with prestigious award by the union ministry of agriculture Mr. Sharad Pawar in New Delhi recently. He also stressed the importance of home/ roof gardening in Chennai city which need more coverage in the expanded corporation limit consisting of 200 wards in south, north and central city besides requesting the Tamil Nadu Government to establish with adequate field staff and branch depots to cater to the need.   In his inaugural speech he cherished his experiences as an old student who studied and enjoyed during his stay in the same school. He reiterated the importance of growing vegetables by the residents in urban areas like Chennai.  The housewives could spare a little time in growing vegetables like brinjal, bendi, green chillies, onion, greens etc in pots and seeking technical know how from the department.  He is proud to reveal his own experience in maintaining the home gardening which helped his spouse and harvest garden fresh veggies and spices for use at the kitchen.

The school children were subjected for quiz programme related medicinal herbs and got cash prizes distributed to winners by the Hon’ble Speaker Mr D Jayakumar on the occasion. Different kind of vegetable seeds and manure like vermi-compost,  neem cake etc was also sold to public in the venue at a nominal cost.  Dr Aravindan Horticure Officer and Prof Shanti Balasubramanian T N Agri University conducted the classes in detail.   Ms S Poongothai Horticulture Officer Villivakkam  proposed vote of thanks.
