A sticker release function to protect endangered Olive Ridley Sea Turtles entangled in fishing nets will be organized by Wildlife Wing of the Forest Department, Department of Fisheries, Indian Coast Guard, Chennai Mechanized Boat Fishermen Welfare Association & Tree Foundation, at Kaismedu Fishing Harbour Bridge, Chennai, on Saturday 14th January 2012 from 5pm to 6pm This is the First initiative taken in India jointly by the Wildlife Wing of the forest department , Fisheries Department, Trawl Mechanized boat Fishermen Welfare Association, Indian Coast Guard and the Tree Foundation to safely release an entangled sea turtle from trawl fishing nets.
During the months for January - April being the Olive Ridley nesting period we record more than 100 dead turtles washing ashore and some of them stranding with flippers cut off, in order to reduce adult mortality of sea turtles we have taken this first of a kind initiative.
