Cricketer Murali Kartik Campaigns For PETA

Cricketer Murali Kartik is heating things up with a brand-new ad campaign for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India. In the ad – which was shot by ace photographer Vickky Idnaani, with hair and make-up by Ambreen Yusuf – Murali poses with a chick (a baby chicken, that is) next to the caption, "Vegetarians Make Chicks Happy". Kartik wants his fans to know that the best thing they can do to protect animals, the planet and their own health is to go vegetarian.

"Being vegetarian is a winning formula for me as an athlete", says Kartik. "A vegetarian diet provides athletes with all the protein, complex carbohydrates and other nutrients we need to get stronger and faster – without the artery-clogging cholesterol and saturated fats found in meat.

So I say, join the vegetarian team, and do yourself, the animals and the planet a whole lot of good. "Eating meat also causes animal suffering on a massive scale. Animals killed for food are crammed into vehicles for slaughter in such high numbers that many break their bones, suffocate or die en route.

At abattoirs, workers often hack at the throats of goats, sheep and other animals with dull blades. Chickens on factory farms are crowded by the thousands into dark sheds that reek of ammonia from the accumulated waste in which the animals are forced to stand.

These birds never see the light of day and are denied everything that is natural and important to them. Kartik joins a growing list of athletes and other celebrities – including Anil Kumble, R Madhavan, Pamela Anderson, Shahid Kapoor and Sir Paul McCartney – who have teamed up with PETA India and its international affiliates to promote a vegetarian lifestyle.
