Swachh Bharat Cleanliness Campaign

Indian Community Welfare Organisation (ICWO) is a well-known non-profit, non-Governmental, social work organisation based in Anna Nagar, Chennai working for various developmental initiatives with a specific focus on women and children for the past 23 years. ICWO along with Greater Chennai Corporation organised “Swachh Bharat Cleanliness Campaign” at Otteri, Greater Chennai Corporation Otteri Crematorium to maintain cleanliness and to protect the sacredness of the place. The event took place on 13th April 2018. “Swachh Bharat Cleanliness Campaign” was inaugurated by Mr.M. Paranthaman, Zonal Officer, Zone-8, Greater Chennai Corporation speaking on the occasion Anna Nagar Zone consists of 15 divisions having an extent of 28 sq km.There are about 2050 conservancy workers working in this zone for collection of garbage from every household. The collected biodegradable wastes are taken to the nearby composting yards for composting. At present, fifteen composts yards in this zone. In addition,8 biogas units and biomethanization plants are functioning in this zone. Otteri crematorium situated at Purasaiwakkam which is having a facility of gasifier technology for cremation of bodies. An average of seven bodies is cremated daily in this burial ground. Indian Community Welfare Organization is presently maintaining the Otteri burial ground well. Speaking on the occasion Mr.A.J.Hariharan, Secretary of ICWO, said the need of the hour is that all of us come together to ensure a clean and green Chennai. I am sure multi sectorial approach will healed a positive result in making a Chennai a better place to live. We need to build partnership with general public, NGO and civic agencies for a sustainable solution and improving a quality of living condition in Chennai. Speaking on the occasion Dr.T.G.Srinivvasan, Health Education Officer, Greater Chennai Corporation said as per the instructions of the Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation, We have been conducting several Disease prevention and Swachh Bharat awareness programmes in Educational institutions, Malls, Factories and Residential areas to make clean, healthy Chennai. Also, in an attempt to engage the people in the task of keeping city clean, we are doing number of activities such as Rallies, Street plays, distributing awareness stickers etc., for spreading about the importance of cleanliness. According to the Swachh Bharat Mission, every Citizen is requested to devote 100 hours per year (i.e) 2 hours per week for doing cleanliness activities in their area. We involve students, NGO's, Resident Welfare Associations, Industrial associations for Cleanliness program all over the Chennai City. Today we are conducting special cleanliness program at Otteri Burial Ground with the coordination of the ICWO (Indian Community Welfare Organisation).
