Rail Museum opens locomotive gallery

The spacious and nicely maintained Chennai Rail Museum at ICF, Madras highlights the rich rail heritage of India. The museum was opened on the 31st March 2002 on the premises of the Furnishing Division of Integral Coach Factory. Over the years the museum has been improved with many new attractions and better facilities for the visitors.The museum has an 1895 model of the Fowler steam ploughing engine made by John Fowler for agricultural purposes, a Nilgiri Mountain Railway coach, GM Inspection car, hand operated crane, an overhead equipment car, Meter gauge EMU, different types of steam, electric and diesel locomotives. All the locomotives and coaches in the rail museum gallery are easily accessible to the museum visitors.
 
The Diamond Jubilee gallery in the museum premises is very interesting and informative. The gallery has photos of steam trains during the year 1965 at Egmore, Pallavaram and Tambaram. An important highlight of the gallery is a Kolkata metro motor coach prototype. The gallery also has on display many scale models of train coaches which are exported to Zambia, Uganda, Angola and to Taiwan.A rail art centre and locomotive power unit indoor gallery was opened on 18th March 2017 at the museum in association with M/S Cummins India ltd. The locomotive power gallery has on display realistic models of diesel and electrical locomotives with complete technical details.
 
An exciting Joy Train ride takes visitors around the museum premises through a long fascinating Jawahar tunnel. The Chennai Rail Museum is situated near the ICF Furnishing Division, parallel to New Avadi Road. ICF, Chennai-38.
