World Prematurity Day 2014

As a prelude to World Prematurity Day that falls on November 17, 2014; Indian Foundation for Premature Babies (IFPB), organized an expo on prematurity, healthy pregnancy, care of premature babies and preschool child health at Aishwarya Mahal (Sowbhagya Mahal), 100 Feet Road, Koyambedu. Prematurity or delivery of a baby several weeks before the completion of pregnancy, results in need for newborn intensive care and infant mortality.

The participants in the expo included Sooriya Hospital Neonatal Unit, Dr. A Ramachandran’s Diabetes Hospital, Sankara Nethralaya, Spastic Society of Tamil Nadu, Little Millenium School and Lifecell International. To raise awareness on prematurity, World Prematurity Day is celebrated on November 17 every year with media campaigns, educational programs and other events. India tops the world in number of premature deliveries; 3.5 million babies are born premature in India annually. Stressing on the importance of creating awareness on appropriate care during pregnancy and emphasizing on the need for neonatal intensive care units in the country, leading neonatal specialist Dr. Deepa Hariharan said.Indian Foundation for Premature Babies (IFPB) is a non-profit organization that works tirelessly for the cause of preterm babies.
