International Girl Child Day Observed

International Girl Child Day Observed at ICWO Head Office located at AP-216,18th Main Road, ’I’ Block, 6th Street, Vallalar Colony, Anna Nagar West, Chennai on 10th October 2013.

In India, the national sex ratio is 914 women per 1000 men. The same report also depicts the alarming fact that the child sex ratio of 0-6 years at India level (914) is lowest since independence.

India currently ranks 119 in the Human Development Index (HDI). Though the country boasts of rapid economic development in the past years, the condition of women and marginalized communities has only worsened over the period.Because of various sector involvements like NGOs, Media, Governments, female infanticide has reduced in our country yet feticide incidents contribute declining sex ratio in cities.Chennai, which had 972 girls for every 1,000 boys a decade ago, today it is only 946 girls for 1,000 boys. And that is two less than the average number.

That the nation has accepted a sex ratio of 952 as "normal" has now made a Chennai-based NGO raise an uncomfortable question: Where is 48? And that was the title of a campaign by the Indian Community Welfare Organization (ICWO).

Mr.A.J.Hariharan spoke on the occasion. The urgent need of the hour is to bring multi sector holistic approach with Judiciary, Enforcement Agencies, Educational Intuitions, Civil Societies Organizations, NGOs and State and Union Governments. In Chennai, 25 volunteers all homeless women will carry out the campaign. "The volunteers meet many people from various walks of life every day," said S Esther Shanthi, coordinator of the urban poor initiative in Chennai. For details call 044-26184392, 65515742.
