Physical ailments and disability are easy to understand and empathize with whereas there is a lot of hesitation and apprehension when it comes to mental illnesses. There are very few well researched stories in the media on mental health related issues. The penetrating power of the media has played a pivotal role in every sphere of life. Media’s role in making and shaping opinions or imparting knowledge and awareness about social issues emerges as the most crucial of all its functions.
In a bid to encourage such efforts SCARF instituted the SCARF-PII MEDIA AWARDS in collaboration with the Press Institute of India in 2012. The SCARF- PII Media Award for Mental Health Reporting was handed over by Mr. Goplala Krishna Gandhi, Former Governor, West Bengal on 21st May, 2013 at SCARF, Anna Nagar in the presence of Padmabhushan Dr. Smt. Sarada Menon, Founder SCARF. The function was organized in view of World Schizophrenia Day which is observed on 24th May every year.
