An informative lecture on food safety and the health risks of
consuming genetically engineered food was rendered by Mr.Anantha Sayanan,
Activist and his team on 13th February 2013 at Dr. M.G.R Educational &
Research Institute, Department of Hotel Management and Catering Technology,
Third Avenue, Anna Nagar.
The event was organised to mark the celebration of
National Safe Food Day. During the function a documentary was screened highlighting
the health issues of eating foods from genetically modified crops. An expert
lecture was delivered on the dangers of genetically modified food. It was in
October 2009 that the apex biotechnology regulator recommended the
commercialisation of Bt brinjal.
It did not take off due to lots of objections
and health concerns about it. Every year since then, February 9 is celebrated
as National Safe Food Day (NSFD), reminding the strength and power of ordinary
people’s voices to ensure consuming safe and healthy food.
