Corporation
of Chennai is commendable in its various measures to prevent mosquito breeding
which causes unprecedented outbreak of viral fever among citizens. Due to spurt in the swarming mosquitoes the
departmental stores experience with roaring sale of mosquito repellents in the
form of coils, creams and cakes which are harmful with its chemical compounds
like "Allethrin" that is
likely to infest with chest diseases.
According to K.Ramadoss, President of
North Chennai District Exnora, stated that a herbal combination was
successfully invented and proved with 99 % result in the biotechnology lab,
Loyola College in Chennai during 2002.
The leaves of Ashoka (Polyalthia
longifolia) and Velikathan- (Prosophis juliflora) were collected and combined
in the process for the manufacture of mosquito repellents without any side
effects. The Loyola Department which
offered to assist and extend support in the supply of herbal repellents to
Corporation of Chennai during 2002 itself.
However there was no response and support from civic body and the proposal
was abruptly dropped by Loyola team headed by Prof A Vincent who is now
assigned as adviser in Science & Technology department attached to Tamil
Nadu Government. The Tamil Nadu Government can encourage such healthy herbal
mosquito repellants as promoted by the college and ban the products of chemical
origin in the State?
