Metro Rail Work Will Not Damage Heritage Buildings

According to the Chennai Corporation sources, the on going Metro Rail work will not damage to the Ripon Building structure.

Metro Rail work involves just a tunneling to excavate earth to set up facilities inside the Ripon Building compound, it will not affect the historic structure.

''The Metro Rail had to  relocate statues of Sir Pitty Theagaraya Chetty and Lord Ripon, and the Golden Jubilee Independence Day commemorative pillar erected in 1998 till the works were over.

Sources said that the Metro Rail authorities would restore these facilities on completion of the work.

Metro rail stations near heritage buildings in the city will have entry and exit points not higher than six metres.

A heritage conservation committee accepted the location and size of the new designs submitted by Chennai Metro Rail. Metro rail made changes to two underground stations - Central station and high court - as per the suggestions given by the committee earlier.

The drawings indicate details of entry and exit points, ventilation shafts and buildings to house power backup and fire safety equipment.

The buildings such as the High court complex, Central railway station, Victoria Public Hall and Ripon Buildings will be given protection from getting damaged and safety measures will be undertaken by Chennai Metro Rail.
