The famous landmark, Anna Arch at the entrance of Anna Nagar is in danger of getting demolished. According to the highways department sources, as the twin flyover project is in progress, the Anna Arch is either to get demolished or relocated further down the road.
A resolution will be passed in the next council meeting of Chennai Corporation. Though the flyovers will bring down traffic chaos many are in favour of keeping and safeguarding the Anna Arch. It is an important monument and part of the city. Demolishing it is not a wise thing to do.
Modern infrastructure development is bring down the city rich heritage structures and landmark monuments.
The Anna Arch was built in 1985 to commemorate 75th birth anniversary of Chief minister C.Annadurai. Anna Nagar named after former CM Annadurai was developed in 1970's by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board. Today Anna Nagar is a top commercial and residential area in Chennai city. Motorists crossing the Nelson Manickam Road-EVR Salai junction and the EVR Salai-Anna Nagar 3rd Avenue junction will not have to wait at any of the signals as two flyovers and a subway will come up near Anna Arch.
The project initiated by the State Highways, is expected to decongestant roads around the Anna Arch. There will be free lefts on both the junctions, while L-shaped flyovers and a similarly shaped subway will facilitate free right turns.
This is going to be a great relief for Anna Nagar residents. The proposed flyover will be 590 metres long with a 7.5 metre-wide carriage way. The other flyover starting on the left of Anna Arch on EVR Salai will directly land on Nelson Manickam Road for all commuters from Koyambedu and Anna Nagar
