157 year Old Engine Chugs Into Guinness Book

The 157-year-old EIR 21, the world's oldest steam locomotive, which is housed at the Perambur Loco Works of Southern Railway, is seeking an official entry into the Guinness Book of World Records.At present, the title for the world's oldest steam locomotive rests with the EIR 22 which is more famous as the Fairy Queen and is also under the care of railway staff at Perambur. 

The Fairy Queen holds the ‘World Record Certificate' from Guinness Publishing Pvt. Ltd., London, which has acknowledged it as the oldest Steam Locomotive in perfect working order anywhere in the world. 

Now efforts are on to have the EIR 21 officially recognised as the world's oldest steam-and-coal engine.

The EIR 21 and EIR 22 locomotives hails from the workshop  of Kitson Thompson and Hewitson Leeds in Britain and were commissioned for the Indian Railway by East India Company. The two locos also share the legacy of transporting troops during the 1857 War of Independence. 

According to records, the EIR 21, built by Kitson Thompson and Hewitson Leeds in the United Kingdom, had arrived in a shipment to India in 1855.The EIR 21 was brought by road to Perambur Loco Works  to revive its lost glory.
