The inauguration function started with prayer songs by Hindu, Christian and Muslim priests. Dr.Georgi Abraham, Founder trustee, TANKER Foundation welcomed the gathering and said that one in ten people in the world suffer from some form of kidney disease and many of them, particularly in India cannot afford the cost of treatment or care.
Awareness and Prevention was of utmost importance. He read out congratulatory messages from Dr.Oreopoulos, his mentor from Canada who also said that after screening people ,follow up and action were very important.
TANKER (Tamilnad Kidney Research) Foundation , a registered non-profit charitable trust started in June 1993 with the aim of helping under-privileged patients with kidney disease , was giving subsidised dialysis and one time financial help for medication, investigation and transplantation. TANKER also was spreading awareness about kidney disease ,conducting screening camps for early detection and encouraging research work into kidney disease.
Mrs.Rajalakshmi Ravi, Advisory member, TANKER Foundation reiterated the importance of awareness and screening and said that the Van donated by Dr.V.Sumantran and his wife Dr.Venil Sumantran was a great beginning for the Mobile screening programme and that the Van would be utilised to Create awareness. Dr.V.Sumantran appreciated the work that TANKER was doing to help the needy and said that he was confident that the donation in his parent's name would be used fruitfully.
Dr.Kanagasabai,Dean,Madras Medical College and Govt General hospital said that it was a good start and that they would give support and guidance to this project. Dr.K.Jacob,Hon Sec, The Madras Medical Mission said that the MMM would extend all support and that he and his family had been with TANKER right from the start in 1993.Mrs.Latha Kumaraswami,Managing Trustee, TANKER Foundation thanked the media and all well wishers for their unstinting help as the need of the hour was creating Awareness and Prevention of Kidney Disease.
She thanked especially Mrs.Rajalakshmi for her devotion and dedication to this programme. She also thanked the Sumantran family for their generous contribution of 6.5 Lakhs for the Van ,the MMM , the Govt General Hospital ,and Ashok Leyland and was hopeful of getting support from all quarters to work together to bring relief to many thousands of people through the Mobile Awareness and Prevention Programme of TANKER Foundation.
