Highly Polluted Canal

The Ainsley canal starts near Villivakkam railway station and connects Otteri Nullah. It passes through the Ayanavaram railway quarters and Integral Coach Factory. Today, the canal has become highly polluted, with dumped waste and wild bushes.

The plight of the canal has not improved though the railways has desilted the canal. The Ainsley Canal, is the wide open canal established by M&S M railways in 1932, and meant to carry flood waters during monsoons but now appears as open sewer canal to its entire length with outfalls. Mr. K Ramadoss, President of North Chennai District Exnora and a resident of 4/1 P E Koil West Mada Street, Ayanavarm, Chennai-23 stated that PWD and Chennai Corporation which are entrusted to carryout the improvement work on canals should also include ‘Ainsley canal’ in railway premises which has a length of 3.8 km between Villivakkam railway station and Pananthope railway colony.
