Mrs.Chitra is an accomplished musician, gifted with melodious voice and excellent command over sruthi, laya and bhava. She made conscious decision early in her career to devote herself to the task of nurturing and fostering the love of Carnatic music in her disciples. Ms. Chitra has obtained her M.A Music from Madras University (1991).She did her Diploma from Teachers’ College of Music run by the Music Academy and she has also been trained in Sangita Ratna course by Music Academy, Chennai.
She had the unique privilege of being taught by well known sangita vidvans and acharyas. Her gurus include Padma vibhushan Sangita Kalanidhi B. Rajam Iyer, Prof. B.Krishnamurthy, Ms. Lalitha Sivakumar, Prof. Karaikudi Subramaniam, Prof. Sundaresan, Jaya Krishnan, Rita Rajan, Dr. Prameela Gurumurthy and others. Mrs.Chitra is well versed in the compositions of a variety of composers starting with trinity and including modern composers and vaggeyakaras.
Her students have been taught special kritis like Diksitar’s Navavarnam and Navagraha Kritis, Thyagaraja’s Pancharatnams and also a large number of compositions of Gopalakrishna Bharathy, Papanasam Sivan and Periasami Thooran. She has painstakingly sought out relatively new and unheard keerthanams of comtemporary composers like Chidambaram Svarna Venkatesa Diksitar, Mangalam Ganapathy and Nadopasana Srinivasan.
She is an expert in organizing group singing concerts, paying special attention to harmony and synchonisation. Mrs.Chitra for the past 30 years has led Thiruppavai rendering in Varasidhdhi Vinayakar Temple in Besant Nagar during the month of Margazhi.
Hundreds of girls attend the sessions and participate enthusiastically. Ms. Chitra has been a judge in Carnatic music talent promotion contests held by the Lions Club of South Madras and other organizations.A major enterprise undertaken by Ms. Chitra is the performance of 108 compositions of a single composer on a single day by her students. Her students performed during December season at Prof. TVG’s AIMA. Her students have won numerous prizes at several competitions held in city. All credit for the achievements of the students goes to Ms. Chitra’s untiring and dedicated efforts.
