Chennai Corporation to develop multi-level car parking

The Chennai Corporation will develop multi-level car parking facilities at seven locations under the public private partnership mode. The civic body has identified land parcels in Saidapet, Basin Bridge, T.Nagar, Perungudi, Shenoy Nagar, Broadway and Nungambakkam for developing the multi-level car parking lots. The parking charges are likely to be determined after completion of the construction of the facilities. “Currently, the proposal is to fix a parking charge of Rs.20 per car per hour. But the charges may change because of the PPP mode,” said an official. Currently, the civic body is collecting Rs.5 per car per hour at all the 89 parking lots along the road. Motorcycles and autorickshaws are permitted to park free of cost now.

After Local Administration Minister S.P. Velumani inaugurated the work on a multi-level parking lot on Thyagaraya Road a few weeks ago, the civic body started identifying locations with traffic congestion for parking lots. The parking lot on Thyagaraya Road will have space for 225 cars and 500 motorcycles. The facility is estimated to cost Rs.33 crore and will be completed in 18 months. “This first multi-level car parking lot on Thyagaraya Road is being constructed under smart city funding. A private player will maintain the facility. Other multi-level car parking lots will be developed by private developers and maintained by them. But the public will have access to the facilities,” said an official. The civic body is conducting a study on congestion on roads and is also preparing a feasibility report. Based on the report, private firms will help develop the facilities. The civic body will decide the components of the structure shortly.Bus parking spaces may also be included in the design.
