Almost 2.5 lakh people die of kidney failure in India every year. It is the third largest killer after malignancy and heart disease. Millions suffer from some form of kidney disease and many of them, particularly in India cannot afford the cost of treatment or care. Around 14440 people get kidney failure every year in Tamil Nadu alone, and only 10% have access to treatment. TANKER Foundation is a registered non-profit charitable organisation started in June 1993 with the aim of helping under-privileged patients with kidney disease by giving subsidised dialysis and one time financial help for medication, investigation and transplantation and spread awareness about kidney disease.
TANKER cares for those, the underprivileged, who suffer kidney problems of any kind, reversible or terminal, regardless of caste, creed or religion. United Way of Chennai (UWC), a registered society under the Societies Registration Act of Tamil Nadu 1975, in Chennai, is a secular, non-partisan, non-political, non-profit, non-government, organization dedicated to improving lives in Tamil Nadu by identifying and addressing the long term needs of communities by promoting and encouraging voluntary charitable service and volunteerism. UWC is a part of the worldwide United Ways (UWW) which features in the list of top 15 charities in the world. UWC aims to help develop, support and strengthen community service projects and improve lives by acting as an intermediary between the corporate and the development sector, promoting corporate social responsibility and working as a catalyst to increase the flow of resources from all parts of society for community and social development projects. Srinivasa Gandhi Nilayam (SGN) is a charitable organisation for the benefit of the downtrodden and needy.
The TRUST imparts training in envelope making, tailoring and embroidery, weaving of sandalwood garlands, typewriting and shorthand, and computer studies. The cultural wing of the SGN has been very active in organising talks on social welfare - especially women's upliftment, Indian art, culture and religion. SUN Foundation is helping the underprivileged for education and medical treatment. It has been helping TANKER Foundation patients for the past 13 years.The Machines were inaugurated by Mrs. Susheela Padmanabhan,Mrs.Padma Venkataraman & Members of M/s. Srinivasa Gandhi Nilayam, Mr. Ashworth of United Way Chennai & Rtn. Purushothaman President,Rotary Club of Madras East( RCME).They also spoke at the function conveying their appreciation for TANKER and their continued support to all TANKER activities. Dr.Georgi Abraham ,Founder Trustee,TANKER welcomed the gathering and Mrs. Latha Kumaraswami,Managing Trustee, TANKER Foundation gave an update about TANKER. TANKER has provided 209,335 free and subsidized dialysis for 1009 patients and given financial support of Rs. 128 Lakhs to 2758 patients.
TANKER does 2594 dialyses per month, of which 2068 are free of cost with valuable help from theChief Ministers Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) and other donors. At present, TANKER helps 293 patients in our units. TANKER has reached out to more than 1.20 lakh people with the 786 Awareness Programmes conducted at schools, colleges, law enforcement offices and public forums. TANKER has also screened 25,000 individuals for early detection of kidney disease through their 257 screening camps.
