Work on restoration of Chennai’s
waterways by the Public Works Department and Chennai Corporation is gaining
momentum. Various canal improvement projects are going on around Chennai city
to ensure free flow of rain water during the monsoon season.
A huge part of 3rd Avenue
stretch at Anna Nagar East has been dug up for carrying out a canal improvement
work. Huge pre-cast blocks are used for constructing the water channel at Anna
Nagar East.
The project undertaken by the Public Works Department is progressing
well under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme. Sixth
Avenue Residents can now heave a sigh of relief during the monsoon as Public
Works Department had recently cleaned up the Otteri Nullah and constructed
strong high raised wall on both sides.
Tamil Nadu State Government is spending
a huge amount for cleaning and improving Chennai’s waterways and canals under
the Chennai Waterways Rehabilitation programme. More over the canal
rehabilitation programme will also cover preventative and safety measures to
protect the city’s waterways.
