The security of Railway passengers and their belongings is the prime
concern of Indian Railways. Providing security to passengers has become a
challenge for Railways as there are increasing instances of anti-social
activities which affect passenger security and safety.
To address this concern,
Indian Railways have introduced many measures taking advantage of the available
technologies. Providing a state of the art of surveillance system in the
station premises is one such effort to enhance the passenger security and
safety. In Southern Railway, the provision of Integrated Security System (ISS)
has been planned with the CCTV Surveillance System for 14 major Stations at a
cost of Rs.41.60 crores.
This is being commissioned presently at nine major
stations and also at 5 suburban stations such as Beach, Mambalam, Tambaram,
.Basin Bridge Junction and Tiruvallur. Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) with
internet protocol-based surveillance cameras, under vehicle scanning systems at
entry/exit points, door frame metal detectors, X-ray baggage screening
conveyors and explosives detection and disposal mechanisms are installed at
busy railway stations.
