Tambaram EMU Workshop


The Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train shed at Tambaram has completed 75 years of service. The shed opened in the year 1931 after the Commencement of meter gauge train service from Madras Beach Junction to Tambaram, Today the loco shed is transformed into a major workshop where all activities pertaining to repairs, inspection are carried out all under one roof. The Shed has the Capacity to accommodate and service 12 car trains. 
 
The Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) Workshop of Southern Railway in Tambaram has been certified as an ISO 9001:2000 institution. 

The ISO certification has been given by Chennai-based ICRS Management Systems. The certification was recognition of the commitment to quality at the workshop, which was inaugurated in 1931. South Indian Railway Company launched electric trains on meter gauge tracks from Madras Beach to Tambaram in the year1931.

 This was the first electric train suburban service in the country. A workshop to maintain the coaches and electric locomotives was started simultaneously at Tambaram. 

The workshop takes care of all the trains that operate on the Beach,Tambaram,Chengalpattu and Tirumalpur sector.
