India Post released a special cover
on 8th October 2012 designed by Nature Forever Society, to
commemorate the decision of the Delhi Government to declare the House Sparrow
as the State Bird of Delhi. The postal cover features a painting by UK-based Sue
Tranter.
The inclusion of the house sparrow
on the Special Cover assumes significance especially when the species is fast
declining due to urbanization.
The
decision to feature the house sparrow on the Special Cover is aimed at raising
public awareness on the need to conserve the habitat of the species to prevent
its decline. Sandeep Dikshit, MP, LokSabha, was the Chief Guest for the Opening
Ceremony which was held on 08-10-2012 while Sandeep Mishra, Additional
Secretary (Environment), Govt. of NCT of Delhi was the Guest of Honour.
Mohammed Dilawar, founder of Nature Forever Society has welcomed this, he has
appealed to the citizens to make this special cover a part of their philatelic
collection. He said Nature Forever Society has been working for the last seven
years to raise the profile of the house sparrow and to involve citizens from
all walks of life in the conservation movement of India.
Dilawar noted that the efforts of
Nature Forever Society are now bearing fruits as the house sparrow is finally
getting the attention it deserves. He said so far only exotic birds or tigers
have been featured on stamps. Nature Forever Society would like to thank the
India Post for bringing out the First Day cover on the house sparrow soon after
it was declared the State Bird.
