The Otteri Nullah is an
east-west waterway which runs through north Chennai, starting at the village of Mullam proceeding through Purasawalkam before
meeting the Buckingham Canal at Basin Bridge. The waterway is around 12km in
length with a catchment area of 38.40 square kilometers. It was once a major
outlet for rainwater in North Chennai.
Today water remains heavily polluted in
spite of many government efforts to clean it up over the years, including the
relocation of many thousands of people from its banks. Heavy rains causes
overflowing of the canal leading to extensive inundation into the surrounding
low lying areas.
The Government of Tamil Nadu will continue to take measures to
keep Otteri Nullah pollution-free and the cleaning process is still going on.
Large amount of money is spent by the Government to clean the nullah.
