Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL)
has commenced tunnelling using the first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) at Nehru
Park metro station.
Union urban development ministry secretary Sudhir Krishna launched
the tunnel boring work at Nehru Park which lies on the Chennai Central- St Thomas
Mount corridor. Metro rail tunnel work will
start soon for the underground stations at Thirumangalam and Second Avenue
Road.
Two TBMs have been shipped in from Shanghai in China, as a part of an MoU
between CMRL , Larsen & Toubro, India and China-based Shanghai Urban
Construction Group.
A total of 11 TBMs will be used for Metro Rail work in the
city. With a capacity to work continuously for more than 10,000 hours, TBMs can
operate at different speeds. The first phase of metro rail will run 24km underground with 19
stations along two corridors. Work on
underground stations is expected to be completed by April 2015.
