Metro Rail Tunneling Work

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has commenced tunnelling using the first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) at Nehru Park metro station.

Union urban development ministry secretary Sudhir Krishna launched the tunnel boring work at Nehru Park which lies on the Chennai Central- St Thomas Mount corridor. Metro rail tunnel work will start soon for the underground stations at Thirumangalam and Second Avenue Road.

Two TBMs have been shipped in from Shanghai in China, as a part of an MoU between CMRL , Larsen & Toubro, India and China-based Shanghai Urban Construction Group.

A total of 11 TBMs will be used for Metro Rail work in the city. With a capacity to work continuously for more than 10,000 hours, TBMs can operate at different speeds. The first phase of metro rail will run 24km underground with 19 stations along two corridors. Work on underground stations is expected to be completed by April 2015.
