Chennai Corporation To Install Energy Saving Road Lights

The Chennai Corporation is taking steps to improve street lighting in the city. According to the Chennai Corporation sources, new solar-powered streetlights would be installed in the eight newly formed corporation zones. Chennai Corporation has decided to replace mercury vapour lamps with energy-saving lights such as induction lamps, LED lights and compact fluorescent lamps.

The Corporation of Chennai is now maintaining
2,13,051 street lights. Chennai Corporation Electrical Department is mainly responsible for installation and maintenance of street lights and electrical maintenance of Corporation buildings, parks, playgrounds and burial grounds. The maintenance of street lights can be broadly classified in two categories, namely underground cables and light accessories. About 27 Hydraulic vehicles are at the disposal of Department for attending maintenance work to street lights.
