High Level Tank Collapsed In Villivakkam Reservoir

One of the five high level steel tanks carrying water pumped from Villivakkam Reservoir (ICF Lake) bursted due to corrosion on the early hours of 16-7-2011 as a result 7 lakhs treated water wasted.   The treated raw water is stored and used for washing purpose of factory employees in ICF. Two of student apprentices in ICF Technical Training School and an aged person sustained injuries during the incident besides causing considerable damages to compound wall.

These steel tanks besides huge reservoir in railway premises have the heritage value since 1930 and it seems that authorities never took initiative for the maintenance  and upkeep of beautiful lake with provision of seven huge wells in it and the 5 existing overhead steel tanks for periodical cleaning and painting etc.

As of now it looks rusty  and neglected due to official apathy. K Ramadoss, Environmentalist stated that the railway board in New Delhi should take initiative with proper fund allotment to revive the huge drinking water source ever seen in Chennai with beautifully surrounded greenary and parks often visited by indigenous and exotic birds which looks pleasant and ecofriendly !
