government's decision on the Uniform Education System (Samacheer
Kalvi). Manoharan Jeyakumar, general secretary of the association, said, 'We are not against Samacheer Kalvi. But the syllabus framed for it should be on par with NCERT.
The current syllabus lacked quality. Students could only memorize the
material and reproduce them in exams and score high marks. There would
be no room for skill development and analytical thinking,' he said.
The new regime under Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has saved the
State education system or else many matric schools would have been
forced to close or shift to CBSE syllabus,' he said.
Asked about fee structure fixed for private schools, Jeyakumar said the
Ravirajan Committee that was constituted to probe into the fee hikes
in private schools should be dissolved.
The State government shouldform a new committee and should fix a slab that exists in private
engineering colleges. If that is done, we would follow it,' he said.
Sheela Prakash, a parent, while criticising Samacheer Kalvi textbooks,
said, 'My daughter who is a Class VI student was academically good.
Nowadays she becomes uninterested as the quality is so low. Students
studying under Samacheer Kalvi would face it tough while attending
competitive exams. For instance in the English subject under CBSE,
there is more scope for skill development whereas under Samacheer
Kalvi it is not so,' she said.
