Involved In Caring And Rescuing Animals


Amala Akkineni was educated at Kalakshetra, Institute of Fine Arts at Chennai, started by the renowned by Rukmini Devi Arundale, Amala Akkineni graduated in Classical Bharatanatyam. She had a successful carrier in South Indian Cinema having acted in 50 films in 5 Indian languages: Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada & Malayalam. She is married to Telugu film Actor Akkineni  Nagarjuna and lives in Jubilee Hills at Hyderabad.

 In 1993 Amala with her husband’s support, founded an animal welfare organization, Blue Cross of Hyderabad that runs an animal shelter housing over 500 injured, abused, old aged animals as well as those in need of Veterinary care. The efforts of Blue Cross aims in Preventing Cruelty to Animals, Rescuing sick and injured animals from the streets and sheltering them;     Reducing stray animal population through humane measures like sterilization and adoption; Supporting working animals that belong to very poor communities through a mobile clinic;

An Education programme for students, professionals, social and citizens groups and advocating wildlife and environmental protection. Amala is presently member of the Animal Welfare Board of India, appointed by the Government of India. She volunteers with organizations like W.W.F and Greenpeace for the environment.

She also works with various NGO’s like COVA on communal harmony and supports Government efforts and UNICEF to spread awareness on issues like HIV, eradication of child marriage and child labour etc. She has partnered with Balavikasa an NGO working in rural Andhra Pradesh on widow empowerment and child education. In 2005 Amala trained in Yoga at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai. She teaches Yoga for Women at Hyderabad .She is also a student of Vipassana meditation. In 2007 Amala trained with Nobel Laureate Mr.Al Gore, (Former Vice President ,USA) and The Climate Project – India, to be a Presenter for Climate Change.

She actively gives presentations to interested groups and has reached out to nearly 75,000 people including students, Government Bodies, Corporate Business centers, NGO’s and citizens groups with a common intention of making Climate Change a topic of understanding in every Indian household and community, and to spread information on how India can lead the way in mitigating Climate Change.
