Modernisation of Chennai Airport


 The Chennai Airport is getting  modernized and expanded. The works is on by  the Airports Authority of India. As part of the plan to expand the current airport, 126.59 acres of land for second runway was formerly handed over to Airports Authority of India(AAI) to start with. As per the modernisation plan, the secondary runway is made over the Adyar river by means of a bridge. The proposed Chennai Metro Rail Project will connect the Chennai International Airport to various parts of the City. The current development projects include construction of a new domestic terminal and expansion of the current International terminal. The airport is currently undergoing modernisation and expansion to increase its capacity to 30 million passengers a year by 2010. The Airports Authority of India (AAI), which is responsible for integrated development of airports in the country, has taken up the expansion work. The expansion that began in October 2008 includes construction of a new domestic terminal, modernisation of the existing domestic terminal and expansion of the international terminal. airport modernization work to be over by Dec  The development and modernisation of Chennai international airport has achieved 71.5 per cent physical progress and the project is scheduled for completion in December 2011
